More information about Indonesia diving
Tucked into the northeastern fringe of the Maratua Atoll, Proco Island offers access to vibrant reefs, steep walls, and thrilling current dives in one of Indonesia’s less-traveled marine regions. Just minutes from the island, sites like Big Fish Country boast fast-moving water channels that attract schooling barracuda, trevally, and reef sharks, while calmer nearby sites showcase expansive coral gardens alive with macro treasures like nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses, and orangutan crabs. Steep drop-offs and healthy reef structures are home to hawksbill turtles, emperor angelfish, and colorful anthias. With few boats and uncrowded sites, diving around Proco Island feels like a well-kept secret—ideal for seasoned divers seeking a blend of drift action and reef exploration in an untouched setting.

Anne R
Proco Island Resort offers a nature-forward experience in one of Indonesia’s most remote diving frontiers. Upon arrival, I was greeted with a warm welcome by Anky, the reservation manager, who provided a thoughtful orientation that set the tone for a relaxed and personalized stay. The resort’s eco-friendly architecture—crafted almost entirely from bamboo—creates a unique, rustic charm that blends beautifully with the lush surroundings. Guests are accommodated in a selection of nine beachfront bungalows and three garden bungalows, with additional rooms available for larger groups booking out the entire resort. The setting is peaceful and intimate, making it ideal for divers seeking a retreat from the hustle of modern life. Proco’s diving operation is streamlined and diver-focused, offering up to four dives daily. A typical schedule includes two morning dives with a surface interval onboard, followed by optional afternoon and night dives. The house reef is a macro lover’s dream. During just one dive, I was treated to sightings of a Pikachu nudibranch, a soft coral crab, cuttlefish hatching, and even a rare Lembeh sea dragon — a true highlight for any underwater photographer! Venturing farther afield, we explored Batu Paja 2 and Tanjung Surih — two sites that took my breath away. With coral formations rivaling the best of Raja Ampat and fish biomass comparable to Komodo’s famed Batu Bolong, these dives were nothing short of extraordinary. Sharks, massive schools of reef fish, and vibrant coral gardens made every moment underwater unforgettable. While some currents were present, they were well within range for experienced divers and added to the thrill of the dives. Meal times are fixed: breakfast (7–9 AM), lunch (~1 PM), and dinner (7 PM), with a small selection of menu options for each. The meals have been flavorful and satisfying, and the chef’s personal attention to guest preferences is a wonderful touch. A small Wi-Fi fee applies (€3 per person per stay), reinforcing the off-the-grid vibe of the resort. The on-site spa provides another layer of relaxation for guests between dives. The atmosphere at Proco Island is calm and laid-back, with an emphasis on independent exploration and quiet reflection. While currently operating with a minimal team during the off-season, the underwater experiences more than speak for themselves.
